ROBOTICS KNOWLEDGE

Mobile robotics glossary: platforms, ROS and JDM.

Definitions of the terms used in platform selection and custom development.

Robotics glossary

Differential drive

A mobile base architecture that controls turning through the relative speeds of its drive wheels. Validate behavior against wheel contact, load, floor and control configuration.

Standard robot platform

A mobile foundation with defined configurations and mounting interfaces. Complete application functions depend on upper modules, software and integration.

Standard platform or custom development ↗

JDM

Joint design and manufacturing. Customer and supplier agree shared development and manufacturing responsibilities, deliverables, acceptance and intellectual property for a project.

Joint development process ↗

OEM

Original equipment manufacturer. In robot procurement, define the existing customer design, branding, manufacturing requirements and supplier responsibilities; the label alone does not establish delivery scope.

ROS compatibility

Software or interface integration with a ROS ecosystem. Confirm distribution, drivers, messages and tested scope; compatibility does not imply universal plug-and-play operation.
